The 48 Group Club

The 48 Group bridges the understanding of this unique China market and global effect. We see this from a perspective of over 60 years, being China's first Western trade partner.

About the Club

The 48 Group Club is an independent business network committed to promoting positive links with China. The Club’s history goes back to the early 1950s, when the founding “Icebreakers” were the first Westerners to break through the worldwide trade embargo on China and establish mutually beneficial trade relations with the newly formed People’s Republic of China.

Club History

“In the 1950s, a group of far-sighted people from the British business community overcame one obstacle after another, and made the famous ice-breaking trip to China, thus starting business exchanges with the newly-founded People’s Republic. Today, more than 50 years later, it is important that the business communities of our two countries carry on the pioneering spirit of those who broke ice, vigorously explore new avenues and new areas for expanded economic cooperation, and work to elevate our business ties to a higher level.”

- The President of the People’s Republic of China, Hu Jintao, speaking at the Guildhall in London, November 2005 during a State Visit to the UK.

Our Members

The Club now has over 600 British and Chinese members, both corporate and individual. Member companies and institutions vary in size from the multinational to the micro and come from all sectors: industry, commerce, government, education, sports, culture and the law, and others are high-level politicians, diplomats, academics and individuals and groups focusing on cultural relations.

Our Events

The Club offers an extensive programme of events that are an important – and often key – means of establishing and maintaining contacts (guanxi) for those active in building friendly relations with China in any field from commerce to culture.

For example, each year the Club organises a dinner for 500 guests at the Dorchester Hotel to celebrate Chinese New Year. Previous guests have included senior Cabinet Ministers, captains of industry and other high profile personalities, along with the Chinese Ambassadors.
