Pieta House will be celebrating its 10th birthday in January of next year. The award-winning charity, which opened its doors in Dublin nearly a decade ago, is dedicated to the prevention of suicide and self-harming, offering a free therapeutic approach to people who self refer to one of its nine centres.

Pieta House’s services help all sections of society – from primary school-aged children right up to the elderly – yet it receives just over 10 per cent of its funding from the government. The charity relies on public donations and fundraising initiatives to pay its costs. Since opening, Pieta House has helped more than 20,000 people at risk of suicide or self-harm through its compassionate therapy-based services.

Although the number of people helped by Pieta’s services continues to rise, Digital Co-Ordinator Oliver Skehan explains that there’s two main factors that has contributed to the growth; a greater awareness of the charity through fundraising events and its ability to help those in need.

“Pieta House’s main fundraiser is Darkness Into Light which symbolises the hope that follows darkness. This is a massive event, a phenomenon, attracting 100,000 people, walking or running 5km at different venues across Ireland.

Everyone starts at approx. 4am and all of the venues start the walk together. In just seven years, the event has grown from one venue to 80 across the country and internationally including events in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the United States this year.

Eventbrite helps Pieta House maximise its income from its flagship fundraising event, which has taken place in Ireland since 2009 with an international element added in 2014. Around 100,000 participants took part in the 2015.

Oliver Skehan shares how Pieta House uses Eventbrite to:

• accurately track the number of participants at Darkness Into Light
• identify where further marketing communications are needed to increase registration numbers
• automate the registration process enabling them to save time and reduce event logistic costs
