The COVID-19 global pandemic has impacted people, businesses, and economies around the world. Over the past seven months, as people have hunkered down in their homes and socially distanced, we’ve seen new trends emerge on Eventbrite, helping people through this unprecedented time. One recent trend we’ve discovered: a rise in coding and programming language events. Events on Eventbrite with the terms Python, Java, JavaScript, and machine learning have nearly doubled from 2019 to 2020. With economic uncertainty rising around the globe as a direct result of the Covid-19 pandemic, it makes sense that people are hungry to learn new skills – or to brush up on existing ones – as they look for new or more secure job opportunities.

Explosion of online coding events

Online coding events made up nearly two thirds (64%) of all coding events in 2020, compared to only 3% in 2019. From February to March this year, we saw the biggest month-over-month spike in these online coding events: a 3X increase, showing that creators on Eventbrite reacted quickly to pivot their events in response to the pandemic. As a result, online events have opened up digital borders and enabled event creators to cast a wider net, reaching and teaching attendees across the globe.

Despite COVID-19, creators on Eventbrite continue to demonstrate great ingenuity by adapting their events in creative ways, which is met by consumer demand as people around the globe continue to search for alternative ways to learn and grow. 2020 isn’t over just yet, so expect even more coding events available on Eventbrite over the next few months.
