Musicians and Startups head East by East East

As some people make their way west to Austin, Texas, for SxSW, this week we invited the London music and tech crowd to go east for ExEE at The Ace Hotel in Shoreditch.

Sean Adams of Drowned in Sound lead the discussion with startup and musical insight from Tom Lovett of Sofar Sounds, Joe Taylor of ATC Management, David Emery of Kobalt Music, and Eventbrite’s Renaud Visage.

The panel discussed the intersection of music and tech and what artists and startups can learn from each other. Whether in music or tech, both sides agreed that you need to focus on making something great over anything else. You might be able to create some buzz in other ways but buzz can only take you so far.

On investment the top tip was to do your homework on any potential partner just as they will do on you – it needs to be the right fit for both of you. So as tempting as it might be to jump at the first sign of a deal, do your due diligence to make sure you share the same vision for your brand or band

The evening came to a climax with Audiosplitter taking home the coveted glitterball trophy from the highly competitive Mixcloud Digital Soundclash. You can check out some pictures from the night on our Facebook Page.

Eventbrite hosted 60,000 music festivals and concerts globally on the platform in 2013 and a third of music event organisers describe themselves as ‘independent artists’ – so maybe rock stars really are the new entrepreneurs?
