As an event planner, you may have attendees coming to your events from all over the world. So you probably encounter instances where you need to charge VAT on your tickets, but there may be times when you don’t need to for a select group of attendees. Wouldn’t it be great if you could automate those exemptions?
Well, we’ve got great news for you. We’ve added a new feature to our tax tool to let you automatically offer VAT exemptions for certain situations. It’ll be available starting this week for your events charging tickets in pound sterling or Euros using Eventbrite’s payment processing, and we’ll be working on adding others in the future.
Increased flexibility for managing VAT exemptions
When you’re setting up taxes on your tickets, you’ll see an option to charge taxes to all your ticket buyers, and new options to exclude buyers who are part of UK or European Union registered businesses in other countries. You even have the ability to select from 27 countries to offer those buyers a VAT exemption. You can also choose to include or keep the tax separate from the ticket price.
Seamless registration experience for attendees
So how does this work? Let’s say you’re hosting a business event in London, but some of your attendees live in the Netherlands. Based on the applicable tax situation for your event, the Dutch attendees may be exempt from paying VAT on their tickets. You can select the option to not charge ticket buyers from countries other than where you’re hosting your event, or use the checklist to select the Netherlands.
When your Dutch attendees register for your event, if they select the option to register as a business, they’ll be able to provide their business name and VAT number. If it’s a valid number, we’ll automatically remove the VAT amount from the total ticket price that the attendee will need to pay to register for your event.
Even though we can’t give you advice on when, who or how much you should charge for VAT, we hope this automated tax tool makes managing events a little easier for you. You can find a lot of great tax classes on Eventbrite to expand your knowledge on taxes, but always talk to a tax professional when you’re looking for tax advice!
