The Portico was opened as a library and newsroom in 1806. It was split into two in the 1920s. The ambitious project to reunite the building for the people of Manchester and beyond is supported by experimental events on the building & collections.

Still in its original 1806 building, the Portico Library celebrates both the historic and the contemporary culture of Manchester, welcoming the public, researchers and members to its unique 19th-century book collection and 21st-century events and exhibitions.
