Overview

Learn life-saving skills with our 1-day Paediatric Blended First Aid course — 6 hrs online + 6 hrs classroom, approved for early years staff

This 1-Day Paediatric First Aid Blended Learning Course combines 6 hours of online e-learning with 6 hours of face-to-face classroom training.

Designed for those working with infants and children in early years settings, this qualification provides the essential knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage paediatric first aid situations effectively.

Meeting the Department for Education’s EYFS requirements, the course covers vital topics such as CPR, choking, allergic reactions, wounds, and other common childhood emergencies.

A flexible and convenient option for busy professionals — complete your online learning in advance, then attend one day of engaging, practical training in person.

Pre-Requisites

This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 years and over.

It is recommended that participants possess at least Level 2 literacy and numeracy skills, or equivalent.

Learners must be able to demonstrate first aid techniques in a realistic work environment, including performing CPR on a casualty positioned on the floor, and should therefore be physically capable of doing so.

This course meets and exceeds Ofsted and EYFS requirements for a 12-hour Paediatric First Aid qualification (Infant and child). It is particularly relevant for teachers, childminders, crèche assistants, playgroup staff, and anyone responsible for the care and safety of children.

Duration & Certification

This course consists of at least 6 hours of practical classroom training, delivered over one day, with an additional 6 hours of online learning to be completed before attending the in-person session.

After successfully completing the course, learners can choose between two certificate options:

  • Standard First Aid Certificate (included), or
  • Level 3 RQF Certificate (available for an additional £10).

Both certificates comply with Ofsted and EYFS requirements and are fully recognised. However, some apprenticeship providers may specifically require the Level 3 RQF qualification.

Please note that the training content is identical for both certificate types.

Course Content

This Paediatric First Aid course provides learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to respond confidently to a wide range of emergencies involving babies and children.

Topics covered include:

  • Roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  • Assessing an emergency situation safely
  • Primary survey and recovery position
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for infants and children
  • Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Managing choking incidents
  • Seizures and asthma attacks
  • Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • Bleeding, burns, and fractures
  • Head, neck, and back injuries
  • Shock, fainting, and minor injuries
  • Childhood illnesses and febrile convulsions
  • Record keeping and incident reporting

Assessment

The trainer will continually assess learners throughout the course to ensure understanding and competence in all practical skills. Assessment includes:

  • Management of wounds and bleeding
  • Care of an unconscious casualty
  • CPR and choking procedures

For those selecting the Level 3 RQF certificate, there is also a short multiple-choice written assessment externally verified by the awarding body.

Just so you know, this is a practical, hands-on course, and participants will need to demonstrate first aid techniques. Learners should inform the trainer in advance of any medical conditions, injuries, or learning needs that may affect participation — reasonable adjustments can be made to support individual requirements.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will receive either a Standard First Aid Certificate or a Level 3 RQF Certificate, both are valid for three years.

To maintain certification, participants must complete another 12-hour Paediatric First Aid course before their qualification expires.

The HSE recommends that all first aiders attend an annual refresher session to keep their knowledge and skills current and aligned with the latest first aid practices.
