The Guardian Foundation is an award winning charity that works directly with journalists, news organisations, audiences and educators, in schools and across communities to:Build news and media literacy skills for the next generation;Champion more diverse voices and perspectives in the media;Support at-risk independent media to continue their work and engage audiences with fact based journalism.Our team of media and educational experts have worked with over 180,000 young people in classrooms, community settings and in the newsroom over the past two decades.We turn classrooms into newsrooms, run interactive workshops, produce lesson plans and train educators, all with the aim of building a media literate generation that have the critical skills needed to navigate a world where mis and disinformation is commonplace.

Effective approaches for secondary and further education educators to develop young people’s critical media literacy skills

Led by news literacy specialists Margaret Holborn and Misoon El-Gomati from the Guardian Foundation.Overview:<ul><li>Discover tried and tested approaches from our free Media Literacy Ambassador programme</li><li>Help develop your students' critical analysis skills and capacity to tackle mis and disinformation</li><li>Receive ideas and resources from our Fake or for real online workshop, teacher guides and lesson plans, and a range of one-off / subject specific resources.</li></ul>For: Educators working with young people aged 11-18 in a range of subjects including English, Media, Humanities, PSHE and Citizenship. More info: Media literacy skills, knowledge and confidence are fundamental in being able to navigate our digital world. Young people need to be inspired and supported to engage with the news and media they consume, understand how it is produced and develop key critical analysis skills so they can build resilience to mis and disinformation. The Guardian Foundation’s award winning news and media literacy programmes Behind the Headlines (for young people aged 11-25) have been addressing this need by delivering innovative workshops, resources and training for schools and colleges rooted in journalism production, the curriculum and educational best practiceThe event will be held in Zoom and a link will be shared in advance of the session via email.
