The Guardian Foundation: media literacy to media fluency in young people

The Guardian Foundation is an award winning charity that works directly with journalists, news organisations, audiences and educators, in schools and across communities to:Build news and media literacy skills for the next generation;Champion more diverse voices and perspectives in the media;Support at-risk independent media to continue their work and engage audiences with fact based journalism.Our team of media and educational experts have worked with over 180,000 young people in classrooms, community settings and in the newsroom over the past two decades.We turn classrooms into newsrooms, run interactive workshops, produce lesson plans and train educators, all with the aim of building a media literate generation that have the critical skills needed to navigate a world where mis and disinformation is commonplace.

Moving young people aged 7-18 from media literacy to media fluency through active participation, to build resilience to mis & disinformation

Led by news literacy specialists from the Guardian Foundation This interactive presentation will share learnings and resources from our participatory approaches and explore how the unique structure of our programmes engages young people with news and media literacy including producing media and co-delivery and design. It will include examples of practical activities that work with children and young people, how we are taking learning beyond the classroom, and explore how an immersive approach with authentic experiences and opportunities to become a media creator produces great results.For: Educators working with young people aged 7-18 in a range of subjects including English, Media, Humanities, PSHE and Citizenship. Young people need to be inspired and supported to engage with the news and media they consume, understand how it is produced and develop key critical analysis skills so they can build resilience to mis and disinformation. The Guardian Foundation inspires young people to engage with news and media, understand how it is produced, develop critical analysis skills and share their voice responsibly - fundamental to all our work is active participation in media. NewsWise and Behind the Headlines programmes in schools and colleges work with children and young people from the age of 7 through to adulthood. In 2023/2024, we reached over 10,000 young people, and evaluation shows that pupils and students improved their news and media literacy skills and behaviours as well as civic engagement.The event will be held in Zoom and a link will be shared in advance of the session via email.
