Explore the findings from 3 Digital Literacy and Social Inclusion research projects conducted at University of Liverpool

This presentation draws on key findings from three projects conducted at the University of Liverpool. First it presents a new instrument to measure digital inclusion at household level, reporting key findings about gaps in digital access and digital literacy among UK families with children. Then, it focuses on two specific populations that may be considered vulnerable for different reasons. On the one hand, it shows how important both digital access and digital literacy are for the social inclusion and reintegration of survivors of modern slavery in the UK. On the other hand, it focuses on the news literacy skills that primary school children need to critically engage with news in a digital society, and on the relationship between their skills and civic engagement. The implications of these findings for research and practice are discussed. Dr Gianfranco Polizzi is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Liverpool. Gianfranco has worked on multiple projects relating to issues of digital inclusion and digital literacy, funded by bodies such as the Nuffield Foundation, British Academy, and Ofcom. His research interests include media and digital literacy, media education, digital inequalities, digital resilience, and digital citizenship. He recently co-led the evaluation of the second iteration of NewsWise – a school programme delivered by the Guardian Foundation to improve primary school children’s levels of news and digital literacy in the UK. Gianfranco is a member of Ofcom’s Making Sense of Media Evaluation working group. As part of this, he advises Ofcom on digital literacy provision and interventions.
