What is Dyscalculia and how do we support Dyscalculic children and young people at home and at school?

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty that affects a person's ability to understand and work with numbers. But it’s not the same as being ‘bad at maths’ — and it’s definitely not about laziness or a lack of effort.For many children and young people with dyscalculia, their struggles go unrecognised or are mislabelled as anxiety, avoidance or low ability. This leads to frustration, shame and falling behind, often despite trying their hardest.However, we know that with the right understanding and support, children with dyscalculia can thrive.On 17 July 2025, we’re delighted to welcome back Amanda Keen, an experienced Dyscalculia specialist, for this in-depth webinar designed for both parents and teachers as we will cover both home and school environments.This webinar is ideal for you whether your child has already been diagnosed, is in the process or you’re just starting to explore the possibility. Having qualified as a teacher in 1995, Amanda spent 17 years teaching across the whole of the primary age range (Early Years to Year 6). She then attained specialist teacher and assessor status for children with dyslexia in 2012 and became an Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA).Since this time she has worked in Learning Support departments in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, supporting children with specific difficulties in both literacy and numeracy.In 2018 Amanda gained her Post Graduate Certificate in Dyscalculia with Distinction and was granted an Assessment Practising Certificate and Approved Teacher Status Dyscalculia. This qualifies her as one of the first specialist teacher assessors for children with dyscalculia in the country. Having Level 7 qualifications in both dyslexia and dyscalculia is seen as the "gold standard" for assessing dyscalculia (Peter Jarrett, Chair of the British Dyslexia Association's Dyscalculia and Maths Difficulties Committee).
