Is it free to attend?

Yes! We just ask that you book a free space so we know how many folks are joining us :)

Question 2

What's the challenge?

It's to try and write 50k words of a novel in November! Except it doesn't have to be a novel, or 50k! We'll try to boost you and help you along the way but you can set whatever target you like — or just come join us and write something else entirely for the month!

Question 3

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

Accepted Answer

Yes! The dedicated co-working space at Social Refuge is accessed via a small ramp near the main counter, then a door via outside access route to get into the space (otherwise there are two sets of stairs!) just ask at the counter when you arrive and they'll help you reach us!

Question 4

Do I have to write a novel?

Accepted Answer

Nope! It can be a series of short stories, or your memoir or anything at all really, it's aimed at creative writing but it's entirely open to how you interpret that. We've had folks write game scripts and poetry with us!

Question 5

What do I need to bring?

Accepted Answer

Whatever you're writing with if you're planning to write — whether that's laptops, tablets or notebooks. There's also plenty of charging points in the co-working space.

Can I bring food or drink?

We can’t — our space is donated to us by Queer Lit & Social Refuge who are a cafe & bar as well as a bookshop.

Are there charging points and plugs?

Yes the co-working space tables have great charging points built into the tables!

Question 8

Can I come?

Accepted Answer

If you'd like to and there's space yes!  Our events are in an LGBTQ venue, and we're a very LGBTQ+ and neurodiverse group of all ages and backgrounds — so we're very welcoming — and all levels of writing experience are welcome — from no experience at all to published writers!

When are your events?

Our in person writing events are every Sunday afternoon 2-5pm and a final writing event on Saturday 30th of November. We will be releasing the free tickets regularly through the month.

Question 10

Do I have to share my writing?

Accepted Answer

No you don't — especially during this challenge it's all about getting a rough draft written — nothing polished or edited! :) If you are using the official challenge website you never have to upload any of your work to the site to update your word count.

I've been attending Fruit Salad — can I come to this?

Accepted Answer

Yep absolutely, Mark is an organiser of both Fruit Salad and MCR Wrimos — and we're really happy for you to come along during November. You don't have to be committed to trying to reach a 50k piece of writing either!

Question 12

Is this an official NaNoWriMo event?

Accepted Answer

No — Nico and Mark have been the official NaNoWriMo volunteers for the Manchester region for many years — but as  there's a backlog in signing on their official volunteers after some big changes internally we're running this for Manchester independently :)
