Lauren Sarah HayesMusical Improvisation for Embodied Human-Machine LearningIn this talk I will discuss and show examples from my ongoing musical ecosystem–or perhaps, rather, musical playground–that I have been messily evolving over the last 17 years. This project embraces the methodology of creative music practice as a way of knowing and asks: what are the ways in which live electronic improvised musical practice can be understood as highly embodied, and therefore specific to our particular and unique physiologies, our aesthetic domains, our behaviors, cultural milieux, ways of living and being as individuals and with others? And how can technologically-mediated systems serve to facilitate imagined, desired, unknowable, or as-yet-unrealized experiences and musical worlds? This research uses the enactive-ecological approach as a framework for exploring a range of practice-based interventions including haptics/touch aesthetics, musical HCI, interdisciplinary improvisation and, most recently, embodied approaches to machine learning.

Xiao XiaoTuning into Intangibility: Lessons for HCI from Theremin LearningOne of the earliest electronic instruments, the theremin is renowned for its unique ability to be played without physical contact. In the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), it has been influential as an early example of gestural interaction and direct input-output mapping. However, it is often cited as a case of poor design, with its difficulty attributed to the lack of tactile feedback. Noting that expert players still emerge, I set out to explore the embodied strategies that enable proficiency on an intangible interface.In this talk, I will present findings from an autoethnographic study of 235 journal entries collected over three years. A key insight shows that, in the absence of touch, expressive theremin playing relies on continuous auditory feedback, proprioception, imagination, and a close link between hand movements and the voice. I will also present interfaces inspired by my theremin experience, with applications in language learning, rehabilitation, and New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME).
