The UK is known for its diversity and rich multicultural society, yet recent events have highlighted deep divisions within our society.In the summer of 2024, as racial tensions escalated into widespread unrest, the fabric of our communities was tested like never before. The riots were both a symptom of surface-level grievances but also a manifestation of deeper systemic issues —racism, economic marginalisation, and fragmented social policies that urgently need addressing.At this crucial juncture, Football Unites, Racism Divides (FURD), an organisation that has worked for nearly 30 years on issues of equality, racism, inclusion and community cohesion in South Yorkshire, is convening the 'Uniting Our Streets and Communities' conference.This event aims to foster meaningful dialogue and action on the pressing issues that these recent events have brought to light.Why This Conference MattersFor FURD the events of this summer hit close to home. Our communities, especially people of colour, asylum seekers and the Muslim community, were the targets of physical attacks,facing threats to their very presence in the UK.The violence exposed deep divisions within our society, yet public discourse has mainly focused on quick measures rather than addressing the root causes of the unrest.This conference provides a platform for regional and national dialogue, aiming to review what has happened and explore practical, community-led solutions for restoring trust, unity, and understanding.What to ExpectDialogue and Solutions: We'll focus on actionable solutions. How can community organisations strengthen cohesion? Should we reshape anti-racism work to engage those who feel left out? What does a future of unity look like, and how can we ensure everyone feels part of it?Expert Analysis: A wide range of voices, including academics, media experts, activists, and community leaders, will analyse the root causes of the unrest, its consequences, and ways forward.Policy to Practice: It's time to push for structural policy changes.
