To Boldly Go Together: Reimagining Robotics and Intelligent Systems based Space Mission Development in the Space West region

West of England Combined Authority (WECA)

As the space sector pivots from pure science and exploration to commercially driven, high-impact missions, it’s clear that traditional approaches to mission development must evolve. While existing processes provide a solid foundation, they often lack the speed and flexibility to keep pace with rapidly changing goals and emerging innovation trends which are vital for missions across cislunar space, the Moon, Mars, and Low Earth Orbit. This need is particularly urgent in robotics and intelligent systems, where fast-evolving technologies and ambitious operational goals call for accelerated development and integration of new and complex capabilities at scale. Across each mission phase—concept exploration, validation, verification, and operations—the development landscape could benefit from adaptive strategies emphasising rapid iteration, efficient large-scale digital testing/concept-exploration, and responsive design to address upcoming first-of-a-kind challenges. The challenge is clear, but can we achieve a positively disruptive shift that’s both practical and actionable? Join us for an interactive, thought-provoking panel that brings together cross-sector industry leaders, academia, and emerging enterprises from the West of England. We will explore this key question and ask if we can leverage regional strengths from multiple industries to build a supply-chain ecosystem advancing robotics and intelligent systems and pushing the boundaries of traditional mission cycles. Together, we’ll discuss creating adaptable tools and approaches that embody a “fail-fast” mentality while balancing the need for robust systems engineering. Let’s boldly explore new ways to design, develop, and deploy space missions, so that we can position the West of England as a leading hub for dynamic space innovation in the UK, Europe and beyond.
