Imagine - refugee week exhibition opening will see the launching of SEAS RW Exhibition, a workshop, music and short films.

We are delighted to invite you to Brighton &amp; Hove Refugee Week launching event at SEAS - Socially Engaged Art Salon, in collaboration with Sanctuary on Sea and EuroMerNet. The event will include the launch SEAS’ Refugee Week exhibition, art presentations, short films, live music and a short art workshop. This is a family event and a safe space for all. The event will take place on Zoom Saturday, June 20th 15:00-17:0015:00 - 15:15: ELLIS, a short film by JR, with Robert De Niro, written by Eric Roth.15:15 A moment silence for remembering those who lost their lives in the way for safety and freedom and an Introduction to Refugee Week by Richard Williams, Sanctuary on Sea 15:20 Imagin - a short address by the Mayor of Brighton &amp; Hove, Councillor Alan Robins15:30 Message in a Bottle - Presentation, Q&amp;A - A participatory art project by Jane Lancashire &amp; Dr. Gil Mualem-Doron in collaboration with Migrant English Project, International Women’s Group, Enthum House, The Hummingbird Young Leaders, International Women's Day event, Unity Yoga Lewes, volunteer rescuers in the Mediteranean Sea plus residents from Lewes and Kingston. The presentation will include a workshop and an exclusive view of part of the project that is under construction at SEAS 15:45 A short film documenting the expereince of a single mother refugee under Covid19 lockdown by Beimnet Tatek Gebrekidan and the The Museum of Ordinary People. 15:50 A short film by Adam Punzano, Beatriz Machado &amp; Haodi Zheng from Sussex University about the Brighton's Syrian renowned musicians Jamal and Alaa. 16:00 Live Lebanese music by Sunny and Tia Shehab.16:20 Message in a Bottle - reading of the workshop’s postcards 16:40 Look beyond borders, a short film by Amnesty International 16:50 End About @message in a bottle project “Message in a bottle” is a collaborative project to commemorate the lives of refugees and migrants that have been lost crossing the Mediterranean Sea (over 20,000 since 2014). The project was commissioned in early 2019 by SEAS - Socially Engaged Art Salon, Brighton, produced by the photographer and community facilitator Jane Lancashire with the consultation of Dr Gil Mualem-Doron, SEAS’s creative producer. From June 2020 the project will be open for participants from all over the globe that would like to share messages of love and solidarity to those who had to make these dangerous journeys crossing the Mediterranean. To do this, all you need to do is to write a short message in your own words or use a quote from a poem or any literary text. You can either film yourself on your mobile reading your message or you can simply leave a voice message instead - send your completed message to WhatsApp number +44 (0) 7706 873322. About a week after sending the message you will be able to see, download and share online your message in the form of a digital postcard as seen below. The messages will also be used for a future exhibition of the project - the creation of a large room installation that will be exhibited at SEAS in December 2020 as part of the UN’s migration day. It may also be part of a nationwide tour in the future hopefully. The installation comprises hundreds of recycled plastic bottles reshaped to resemble water drops. A message is written on every drop. Each piece represents a single lost life. This project includes so far the participation of more than 100 people from various community groups in South East England. The project was carried out with the support of Sanctuary on Sea, EuroMerNet, Migrant English Project, The Network of International Woman Coalition, Enthum House, Hummimgbird Young Leaders and Sunday Assembly and more.
