Opening Address

Hear from the UK Government and Scottish Government on new developments in policy to support community energy initiatives. We have been working with partners in the Scottish Community Coalition on Energy to call for a Fair Energy Deal for Scotland. We have already seen progress towards several of our key asks, including a consultation on community benefit payments, increased funding for community energy, and Government engagement in the repowering issue (through this event). This session will cover the latest policy developments, upcoming opportunities, and how community voices can drive meaningful change.

Session 1: Shaping Policy for Communities' Energy Needs

Liam Cantwell, Community Energy Engagement Manager from our sponsor SP Energy Networks will highlight the links between policy and practical projects, and provide insights on what SPEN can do to support communities. He will introduce the SP Energy Networks sponsored interactive sessions 2A and 2B, below.

Sponsored by SP Energy Networks. 61% of all community wind generation in Scotland is expected to need repowered by 2035. Community Energy groups have a lot of experience with developing and building renewable generation projects but the landscape has changed drastically since these wind turbines were first built. This session is for community groups who have renewable generation and are looking to repower to continue to secure revenue for their community. The session will explore progress and milestones in community repowering projects.

Interactive Session 2B: Viable New Community Generation?

Browse displays and connect with exhibitors sharing insights and resources. There shall be stalls for: Community Energy Scotland, SP Energy Networks, Howden Insurance, EWT, and New Stream Renewables. 

Exhibition and Networking

 Learn from real-world experiences and successful community energy projects. In this panel discussion you’ll hear about real examples of embarking on community generation and repowering projects. The panel will include a range of community energy groups at various stages of building renewable generation and repowering sites. The discussion will include real examples of how community groups have built renewable generation and secured income (that doesn’t have strings attached) for their community.    

Case studies include Dundee Renewables Energy Society who have built a solar farm; Findhorn Wind Park which has extended the life of their wind turbines; Radio City Association who have built the first revenue subsidy free community owned wind turbine; and West Coast Community Energy which is an initiative between three community landowners to build the largest community owned wind farm in Scotland! 

Session 3: Panel Discussion: Case Studies

Facilitated by Mark Hull, a Final discussion and summary session capturing and confirming: Our current status, key priorities, main challenges, and tasks and routes to action going forward.

Session 4: Interactive Presentation: Key Points and Takeaways from Today

 Share reflections and suggestions to improve future events.
