The Vagina In The Room in Singapore during 16 Days Of Activism

I﻿ design and deliver multidisciplinary experiences through live performance of songs, spoken word merged with my paintings, drawings and photographic and video footage. Events include exhibitions, installations, performances as well as participatory programmes that merge my creative practice with my contemplative practice. I am a yoga, mindfulness and meditation teacher and infuse my arts events with these as well as offer stand-alone programmes. ie classes, workshops, retreats for groups and individuals both on-site as well as online.

The Vagina In The Room premiered at the Sonic Lab Belfast on October 30th with a series of in-person and online events in Belfast as well as Singapore from October - December 2024.

Be an ally during the 16 Days of Activism. Unite to end violence against women and girls (VAWG) by joining 'The Vagina In The Room', a compelling and empowering multidisciplinary performance by multi-awarded, Indian South African artivist, Juanita Rea.Juanita confronts social stigma by telling her inspiring story of healing from childhood sexual trauma and domestic violence through powerful songs, spoken word and visual art.Members of the audience will be welcome to respond to the piece within the context of the global VAWG epidemic. Juanita will facilitate audience engagement with a post-show circle in which participants will have a safe space to draw and write their responses alongside the option to verbally share whatever they feel comfortable sharing in the group. In previous shows, this post-show conversation saw people sharing concerns about the safety of women and girls in a world in which politics, conflict, cultural tradition seems increasingly structured by patriarchal and misogynistic views.<a href="https://www.unwomenuk.org/16-days-activism/" title="https://www.unwomenuk.org/16-days-activism/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">#NoExcuse. Nov 25th -Dec10th 2024</a>With references to childhood sexual trauma, domestic violence, PTSD etc the performance is suitable for adults (18+) only, with attendees welcome to take self-care breaks in between pieces and in a manner that is considerate to Juanita and audience members. About the Artist and Artists Who contributed to this pieceJuanita Rea is Visiting Scholar at the School of Arts, English and Languages, Queen's University Belfast (QUB) with funding through an Arts Council Northern Ireland 2023 SIAP Award. She is also a recipient of 2 ACNI Minority Ethnic Awards (2021/2022)Juanita merges spoken word with songs and monologue alongside soundscapes, visual art and videos to take the audience on a compelling, captivating journey offering insight into her lifetime of creative and contemplative practice, supported by therapy and traversing self-loathing with self-acceptance and self-love.Alongside spoken word and monologue, Juanita will be performing songs from her upcoming debut album that she has worked on with producers Chip Bailey and Phil d'Alton with pre-recorded music from a diverse range of talented musicians - Ciaran Lavery, Jonny Woods (Wynona Bleach), Nick Scott, David McCann (Hard Rain Ensemble), Lucy Drennan, Martin Surginor, Alan McClure, Bob Bowles, Nic Bailey, Mukesh Sharma, Liz Kelly and Bernard Jackson (OTH Collective), Dave McMaster, Chip Bailey and Peter Wilson aka Duke Special. These are valuable reflections from Juana Simpson whose honest insights speak to the value this performance offers survivors of childhood sexual violence.
