SSERC Wider STEM Engagement provision includes 6 programmes: Nuffield Research Placements, ESERO-UK Space Champion, STEM Ambassadors in Scotland Hub, Young STEM Leader Programme, Enthuse Partnerships and Education Industry Partnerships  which all aim to inspire and enthuse young people to follow a career in the STEM subjects. This event is aimed at S5 pupils, College students, Secondary School teachers and DYW School Co-ordinators in Scotland

SSERC co-ordinates the Research Placement Programme (formerly Nuffield Placements) in Scotland and we invite S5 pupils, College students and teachers to this short online session to find out more about the programme and how it works, with the aim of applying for a placement for Summer 2025.Research Placements provide engaging, hands-on research projects, where S5 pupils /College students (who are sitting Highers for the first time) have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards the work of a host organisation through a well-supervised but independent research collaboration relating to an area of science, quantitative social science, computing, technology, engineering or maths (or a combination).There are eligibility criteria that a student must meet in order to apply for a Research Placement.Students must meet at least one of the following:<ul><li>Do you attend a Scottish state funded school or college?</li><li>Is your family's combined income less than £40,000 per year?</li><li>Are you currently, or in the last six years have you been, entitled to free school meals?</li><li>Do you currently live, or have you ever lived, in local authority care?</li><li>Will you be the first in your immediate family (not including any older siblings) to participate in higher education?</li><li>Are you in receipt of, or entitled to, discretionary payments at school/college (e.g. EMA, 16-19 Bursary Fund)?</li></ul>Placements will take place during the summer of 2025, with prior online learning, 2 weeks in-person working with an industry or university/college partner and up to 2 weeks online completing additional planning and research work after the placement.This information session will take place on MS Teams and will cover an introduction to Research Placements, outlining key dates and what it involves. A follow-on session will take place in February to offer assistance to teachers and pupils with the application process.
