An update on the 4 year restoration programme of the iconic Tyne Bridge

Wednesday 22nd January 2025Harbottle Suite, Black Gate, Newcastle Castle12.30pm to include tea coffee and sweet treats&nbsp;£10 members £15 guestsAn ambitious four-year programme of restoration of the Tyne Bridge got underway in April 2024, as refurbishment works moved to the main bridge deck, which is expected to be complete by Summer 2028, ahead of its centenary in October 2028, to restore it to its former glory.&nbsp;This is a hugely challenging and complex project, due to the sheer size of the bridge, its age and Grade II* listed status, protecting the kittiwake colony from disturbance and the massive scope of work required - which isn’t just the sizeable task of painting it - but a full restoration programme, as well as managing traffic flow on a major gateway to the city which is used by up to 70,000 vehicles a day.&nbsp;This presentation will give an insight to the challenges involved in restoring our region’s most iconic structure.&nbsp;Join us for this early afternoon talk in Newcastle Castle, the closest venue to the bridge we were able to secure. Our speakers are Councillor Marion Williams, whose portfolio is ‘Connected, Clean City’ and she will be joined by Pamela Holmes, Assistant Director of Transport for Newcastle City Council.
