Ashford, Ph.D., is Education Director and co-owner of SA Swallowing Services, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. He served the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Medical Speech-Language Pathologist for 28 years, Tennessee State University as a tenured Associate Professor, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine as an adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor, and Dar Al-Hekma University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia as guest professor. He is published and a life member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Consequences of its impairment may result in choking, dehydration, malnutrition, and pneumonia. These consequences are examined with special emphasis on the relationships of the body’s health status and immunocompromise, dysphagia, aspiration, respiratory protection, and poor oral health conditions. Aspiration alone does not cause pneumonia, and pneumonia is not easy to develop. Understanding of these interrelationships lead to better patient assessments and intervention.Learning Outcomes:As a result of this activity, the participants will be able to1. describe and assess the three primary factors attributed to the development of bacterial aspiration pneumonia;2. identify and apply indicators and measures of the patient’s health status when making decisions about safety and appropriateness of oral hydration and nutrition intake;3. explain, not only the biomechanical impairments causing aspiration events, but the importance of aspirate content and amounts;4. identify overt signs of periodontitis, and explain its relationship to systemic diseases; and,5. describe the complex relationships of the three primary factors necessary to introduce pathogens into an immunocompromised respiratory system leading to pneumonia development; and6. apply knowledge of the complexities of associated with dysphagia and formulate appropriate treatment strategies
