Talk on Intermediaries: Facilitating communication with vulnerable persons in justice settings by Dr Tina Pereira

Abstract:This presentation discusses the role of an intermediary in the context of legal settings in England and Wales. An intermediary is a communication specialist with additional training in legal processes who facilitates communication between vulnerable persons (VP) and the court and whose role is significantly different to other court professionals such as appropriate adults. This presentation briefly discusses some communication vulnerabilities where instructing an intermediary would improve the quality of a VP’s evidence and explains how intermediaries typically work including the nature of their input in court and at police interviews. Finally this presentation makes recommendations for joint working between intermediaries and interpreters.Speaker's Bio:Tina Pereira, PhD, is an intermediary in the criminal justice system in England and Wales, where she works with vulnerable witnesses, defendants, suspects and other parties (family courts). She is an Honorary Research Fellow at City St George’s, University of London. Tina also has over 30 years working as a speech and language therapist with individuals with a range of neurodevelopmental conditions. Tina is a member of The Intermediary Cooperative, a not-for-profit organisation of intermediaries working in all types of justice settings. She was previously on the Ministry of Justice’s (MoJ) training team and currently serves on the Registered Intermediary Reference Team, that advises the MoJ on a range of operational and strategic matters. Tina has delivered training and presentations to practitioners and academics both in the UK and overseas.
