Summer Sheffield IoT Meetups: 27 August, Online

Connecting Capabilities for the Internet of Things (IoT)Pitch-In is led by the University of Sheffield in collaboration with the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Newcastle and industrial and health sector partners. Funded by Research England, the project will allow the Universities to investigate barriers to successful IoT take-up, trial solutions then capture and disseminate outputs and guidance regionally, nationally and globally. The Pitch-In collaboration will benefit the UK as a whole via wide-scale collaboration between academic institutions coupled with an extensive network of public and private sector collaborators and will support the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy by significantly enhancing the commercialisation and wider exploitation prospects of UK IoT research and technology.

Summer Sheffield IoT Meetup, focusing on our region's response to Covid-19 and featuring our IoT internship students.

Ioetec and co-hosts Pitch-In, are delighted to invite you to the second of our special Sheffield IoT Meetups over the summer – featuring our IoT students and some excellent guest speakers. The students are developing hardware and software sensor systems that make use of the regional LoRaWAN network for Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity. For businesses and organisations: Find out how you can use low-cost sensing to start gathering data and extracting information to improve your decision-making and strategy development.Topics include our region’s response to Covid-19 and technology projects on smart city living, manufacturing and health and well-being.Agenda:5:30pm: Welcome from Mark Davies, CEO and Co-founder of IoetecThe Pitch-In IoT students – Sensor project progress: end of project updates (3 projects)Undergraduate students from electronics, aerospace and computer science courses are working on dedicated projects over the summer to develop a range of different sensors. They are generating proven code and electronic design files for the basic LoRaWAN functionality, and to help enable its use in the region.Prof Fabio Ciravegna, University of Sheffield – ‘Back to work safely - social distancing in the workplace’ Prof Ciravegna is professor of Pervasive Technologies at the University of Sheffield and presently CEO of Aeqora, a university spin out providing IoT solutions for mobility. His team has recently been awarded a prestigious Innovate UK Covid-19 award and they are launching a product that uses mobile phones for social distancing. The Pitch-In IoT students (3 projects)Dr Martin Highett, the Diamond Building, University of Sheffield – ‘The digitisation of a pilot pharmaceutical manufacturing line: the benefits for teaching and industry’Martin is a Team Leader in the Multidisciplinary Engineering Education Department, a cross-faculty facility for delivering practical teaching across the Faculty of Engineering. He is managing the implementation of the Diamond Pilot Plant Industry 4.0 Demonstrator, a research-led teaching facility in the area of process engineering that makes use of IoT and digital twin simulation technologies. The Pitch-In IoT students (3 projects)Mike Faulks, Chief Technology Officer and Co-founder, Ioetec – ‘Quantum threat to IoT’Though the promise of quantum computing is unquestionably exciting, there’s cause for concern that within the next decade, expect to hear of a quantum computer that can break current advanced encryption instantly. That will put data for every employee, customer and company at risk unless we strategize for quantum-safe security practices now.Today’s IoT devices are typically built to last for five, ten or even many more years. To keep IoT environments secure, organizations will need to be thinking about future-proofing their encryption against quantum threats today.A link to the Blackboard Collaborate platform we are using will be sent to people who have registered before the event. We look forward to welcoming you!Warm regardsThe Sheffield IoT Meetup TeamContact: Pitch-in-enquiries@sheffield.ac.uk
