We work to promote the values and principles of Self-directed Support, including choice, control and flexibility, in all aspects of social care support.We do this by working collaboratively across the social care sector: with Scottish Government, Local Authorities, third sector organisations and our members, to improve Self-directed Support implementation in Scotland.As a membership organisation, we bring together those who share our vision and values, to amplify our collective voice around social care support issues.As a Disabled People’s Organisation (an organisation where at least 51% of the Board are either disabled people or/and people who are eligible for social care support), we stand up for the rights of disabled people and people who need support.And we champion local Independent SDS Support Organisations across Scotland, who help thousands of people every year access and manage the support they need to live a good life.Find out more out what we doon our website.

A workshop to explore capacity, supported decision-making, the role of Independent Support for SDS, peoples rights and how to uphold them

This workshop is an introduction to Supported Decision Making.Everybody has the right to equal recognition and respect for their choices. Some people may have difficulty when making decisions and may benefit from support to ensure that decisions made by them, or about them, genuinely reflect their choices. This workshop will introduce how Supported Decision Making can benefit people.The workshop is being facilitated by The Advocacy Project. The Advocacy Project is a human rights-based organisation and provides independent advocacy in Glasgow and East Renfrewshire. Independent Advocacy supports people to have their voices heard and be empowered to be involved in decisions that affect their life.What are the aims of the workshop?<ul><li>Participants will be able to increase their knowledge of Supported Decision Making</li><li>Participants may feel more informed about the role of Independent Advocacy and understand how this applies in the context of Supported Decision Making.</li><li>Participants will be able to increase their knowledge of what it means to follow a ‘human rights-based’ approach and consider how this can be applied across their practice.</li><li>Participants will be able to increase their understanding of the impact that various laws, policies and best practice guidance have on Supported Decision Making.</li><li>Participants will be able to consider how the principles of Supported Decision Making may apply to their day to day practice through a range of practical examples.</li></ul>Who is the workshop for?The workshop is aimed at people throughout Scotland who would like to learn more or refresh their knowledge about Supported Decision Making. Anyone who works in a role supporting people may find this workshop useful.What will the workshop cover?<ul><li>The workshop will introduce some of the key concepts that inform Supported Decision Making. This will include exploring the role of independent advocacy and considering the impact of relevant legislation.</li><li>The workshop will provide practical tips and ideas so that you can consider how Supported Decision Making applies in your day to day practice.</li><li>The workshop will also explore various stories of Supported Decision Making sharing some real-life examples of the potential impact that Supported Decision Making can have.</li></ul>There are discounted tickets available for members, full price tickets for non-members and a small number of free places for people using SDS and unpaid carers.
