Join GEM to hear from a range of museums who will share case studies of working with LGBTQIA+ communities. They will share inspiration and practical tips of how they engage effectively with these communities with inclusion and accessibility in mind.This event is planned towards the end of LGBT History Month so museums can think about embedding inclusive practice into their work all year round.Speakers are: Matt Exley - Participation Producer (adult programmes), National Museums LiverpoolIn this short presentation Matt will explore how National Museums Liverpool moved to a co-production model with local communities when programming for Trans Day of Visibility. He will describe the benefits, challenges, and rewards of working with Trans and Non-Binary groups to uplift their voices, help them to tell their stories, and show how museums can help promote a more Trans-inclusive world. Ashleigh Hibbins, Head of Audiences and Learning and João Philippe Reid, Exhibitions and Interpretation Manager, Culture Perth and Kinross.When Culture Perth and Kinross opened the new Perth Museum in 2024, they wanted to make a bold statement about prioritising marginalised communities. That's why they chose to centre LGBTQIA+ voices and perspectives in their award-winning first temporary exhibition, Unicorn. Learn about the range of co-production and artistic commissioning projects used to ensure the exhibition was community-led, and how the team navigated internal and external stakeholders to overcome structural heteronormativity. Molly Barker (she/they), Learning Officer, Adult Programmes, London Transport MuseumMolly produced a Museum Late event, Pride on the Move, to celebrate LGBTQ+ London, Londoners and transport workers as part of a broader programme of Lates at London Transport Museum. Parts of the event were co-produced with OUTbound, TfL’s LGBTQ+ colleague network group, and included short talks, hands-on activities, music and special displays. This talk will explore elements of co-production, successes and learnings, the importance of a USP, and creating a safe event for LGBTQ+ staff, contributors and visitors.Charlotte Paddock, Adults and Communities Participation Manager and Moa Strand, Families and Young People Programme Manager, Royal Museums GreenwichQueer-led programming at Royal Museums GreenwichThrough the establishment of an LGBTQ+ Family Network as well as the Queer History Club, RMG will discuss how communities are shaping programming and research processes across the National Maritime Museum and Queen's House. James Daybell and Kit Heyam – Gendering the MuseumGendering the Museum is a collaborative project directed by James Daybell and Kit Heyam, which aims to help change the representation of gender in museums, galleries and heritage sites. There will be opportunity for discussion and networking with other participants working in this area.Free for GEM members. £5 for non members.
