Art and Architecture in Neolithic Orkney by Dr. Antonia Thomas, Lecturer in Archaeology UHI

The Neolithic monuments of Orkney - including the houses at Skara Brae, the great passage grave of Maeshowe, and the incredible complex of buildings at the Ness of Brodgar - are justly world-famous for the quality and preservation of their architecture. Many of these buildings have stonework that has survived to over a metre in height, and many have original in situ decoration on their walls. At the Ness of Brodgar, portable stone artefacts with similar decoration have been found in secure contexts during excavation. Together this unique assemblage gives us an unparalleled insight into the aesthetic and symbolic world of Neolithic Orkney. In this illustrated talk Dr Antonia Thomas of the UHI Archaeology Institute based in Orkney, will discuss her fieldwork in Orkney and the research she has undertaken on these carvings over the past 15 years.
