Webinar by Dr Jess Wade, entitled "Chiral materials and their application in electronic devices"

In the first webinar of the TIGER in STEMM summer webinar series in physics, Dr Jess Wade (she/her) from the Imperial College, London, will speak about her research work. Title: &quot;Chiral materials and their application in electronic devices&quot;Summary: From wearable sensors to personalised medicines and solar panels, nanostructures made from functional molecules are already enhancing our lives. Nonetheless, science is still playing catchup as nature has been nailing these nanostructures for hundreds of millions of years. Jess reveals that the most miraculous molecular structures of all exist as non-superimposable mirror image pairs; where the left and right-handed forms can have remarkably different interactions with electric and magnetic fields. Ultra-thin layers of these chiral molecular structures can be used to generate circularly polarised light for efficient display technologies, filter electron spins for high performance spintronic devices and to create encrypted patterns for security tags. The 2020 webinar series is being run in the memory of the late Canadian-American geophysicist/planetary scientist Claudia Alexander whose work and leadership paved the way for many of NASA&#x27;s missions including the Galileo mission. As a Black woman who reached the very top of her disciplines in physics, a teacher and an author she was a great role model and has left behind a legacy which inspires many, particularly women of colour working in STEM.
