Doing qualitative research in a digital world

CAQDAS Networking Project, University of Surrey

CAQDAS Methodological Webinar : Trena Paulus &Jessica Nina Lester talk about the role of digital tools and spaces in qualitative research

Doing qualitative research in a digital worldThe presenters will guide participants in a critical appraisal of the role that digital tools and spaces play across the qualitative research process. Technology is not neutral, but neither does it determine human action, so clearly articulating the role of materiality, in the form of tools that we use in a given research study, is a crucial first step in research design. A range of strategies for designing a unique digital workflow for qualitative research studies will be illustrated, including the political, ethical, and methodological dilemmas and solutions they present. The presenters will illustrate how to develop a process for engaging in reflexive practices that will keep the consequences of choices around tools, researcher and methods at the forefront of the research process. These strategies will include processes such as, reviewing literature in innovative ways, theorizing new sources of data in a digital world, considering how technological developments are impacting transcription and data analysis practices, and engaging in networked practices that represent findings in relevant ways to reach the intended audience.SpeakersTrena M.
