Modern sleep science can now answer some of humanity’s ancient mysteries:Why do we sleep? Is the brain just switched off when we do? What about dreaming? How to get ‘a good night’s sleep’?Is snoring normal? Do birds sleep in the air? Does alcohol help or hinder?Babies, menopause, shift work, torture techniques - sleep deprivation is a hot topic with profound medical, social and economic implications.Join us for an entertaining and informative evening that will enlighten you about the hours of darkness.There will be plenty of time for questions.Meet our guest speaker, Peter Bauer and host, Allison Ferns:Dr Peter Bauer MD FRCA, Consultant Anaesthetist at University Hospitals Sussex, has ‘put thousands of patients to sleep’, carefully monitoring their heart, lung and brain functions. His longstanding interest in neurobiology since Medical School led him to spend nights in a Sleep Laboratory in Giessen, Germany, and pursue further education in neuroanatomy, culminating in a one year research scholarship in Tokyo, Japan. After a clinical attachment in Zürich, Switzerland, he got jet lagged when travelling on to work in New Zealand. He was awarded his Medical Doctorate upon return to his alma mater in Lübeck, Germany, before moving to work for NHS England where he has trained and worked as anaesthesiologist and perioperative physician for the last 25 years, enriched by a six months clinical research Fellowship in Jena, Germany along the way. He routinely employs biofeedback, deep breathing, dreamscape, ‘hypnotic conversation’ and sedation techniques in conjunction with electroencephalography (EEG) to manage perioperative anxiety, cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic problems and help his patients find the right sleep. ‘in somno securitas’ - safety in sleep - is the motto of the Association of Anaesthetists for good reason. Allison Ferns is Brighton through and through. Well, Telscombe Cliffs, actually. She has a career spanning decades and a range of media – including commercial and public service radio, TV, magazines, stage and screen. She even interned at Number 10 Downing Street, performed in a girl band and sold fudge on Brighton Palace Pier. She’s been recognised by the radio industry with a raft of awards and nominations to her name. Allison also comperes events and performs in theatre.Allison is a presenter and reporter for BBC Radio Sussex. As host of Allison Ferns' Breakfast Show she's been waking us up with a smile for the last five years. She knows better than most the importance of a good night's sleep!
