Join us as we catch up with guest speaker Dr Harriet Axbey and discuss how to survive and thrive at university as an autistic student

SWAN Places

SWAN Places are in-person social meet-up groups in locations across Scotland. They are autistic spaces, run by autistic volunteers.
These local groups are relaxed and laid-back gatherings for all women and non-binary people who identify as autistic.

SWAN Spaces

SWAN Spaces are regular online groups and events. They are safe, friendly autistic-only spaces, led by autistic staff.
In SWAN Spaces, you are free to participate as little or as much as you feel comfortable.

<h3>About this Webinar</h3> Join us for a conversation with Dr Harriet Axbey author of 'University: The Autistic Guide: Everything You Need to Survive and Thrive'Harriet will be discussing the autistic university experience, and how to get the most out of your time at university. Starting with ‘surviving’, she will cover the essentials to consider before applying, and starting university, and how to get through those first few weeks. She will then move onto ‘thriving’: how to enjoy your degree, succeed in your academic goals, and find your people. We will then take some of your questions, and hear about your own experiences of university.  We Hope that You Can Join Us <h4>More About Our Speaker:</h4>Harriet is an autistic researcher working on the ‘Autism from Menstruation to Menopause’ study at Swansea University. Her PhD focused on neurodiverse interactions between autistic and non-autistic people. She has published two books, ‘My Brother Tom Has Superpowers’ for children, based on her own experiences on growing up autistic, and ‘University: The Autistic Guide’ for autistic people going to university, and anyone who might support them. You are free to participate as little or as much as you feel comfortable - talk, join in the text chat, stim, bring your pets along, or just watch and listen with your camera on or off.We currently use Eventbrite and Zoom as tools to enable us to run these online groups. They do have pros and cons and can be a bit stressful to navigate sometimes, so please allow yourself plenty time to get logged in before the group starts - it's fine to join a bit early as you'll just see a virtual 'waiting room' screen until the group starts and the host lets everyone in at once.When registering to attend, please do use the name you feel most comfortable - this does not need to match your ID or other documents.Remember to check when joining the meeting that your zoom screen name also matches the name you wish to use in the group. You have control to change that to the name you want and also to add your pronouns if you want to - you can change this in your zoom account settings any time and you can also edit while you are in the waiting room before the meeting starts (or during the meeting).Closed Captions are available in all meetings and you can control whether you want see them or not during the meeting.If you have any questions or need any help accessing this online session, please get in touch: info@swanscotland.org
