Please note the date has been changed to 12th October, as previously advertised.Part of the University of Strathclyde&#x27;s Centre for Sustainable Development Launch Webinar SeriesResponding to children’s distinct needs, and realising their full range of rights and opportunities, is the inherent challenge in achieving the SDG16 of peaceful, just and inclusive societies for all.This webinar will be led by Professor Jennifer Davidson, Executive Director of the Institute for Inspiring Children’s Futures, with Professor Ann Skelton (University of Pretoria and Member of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child); Dr Romina Boarini (Acting Director of the OECD WISE (Well-Being, Inclusion, Sustainability, Equal Opportunity) Centre), and Mr Manaff Kemokai (President of Defence for Children International (DCI) and Director of DCI Sierra Leone). Together they will examine the priorities, mechanisms and next steps in fulfilling this global ambition for children, particularly in light of COVID-19, which has abruptly thrust the rights and well-being of children and families into greater risk around the world.SpeakersProfessor Ann Skelton is an elected member of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde’s Institute for Inspiring Children’s Futures. A Professor of Law at the University of Pretoria, she holds the UNESCO Chair in Education Law in Africa. Until recently, she was the Director of the Centre for Child Law. Ann is a respected global figure in academia and across international children’s rights practice, with an established track record in the areas of youth justice and alternative care in both research and legal practice. Notably, Ann has worked as a children’s rights lawyer in South Africa for over 25 years, and has effectively lobbied for the rights of children in the criminal justice system throughout her career. She Chaired the SA Law Reform Committee that drafted the Child Justice Act, and led the UN technical assistance project to prepare for its implementation.Dr. Romina Boarini is Acting Director of the newly established OECD WISE (Well-Being, Inclusion, Sustainability and Equal Opportunity) Centre, where she promotes the OECD’s position as a leading international institution in the area of well-being, inclusion, sustainability and equal opportunity, and contribute to strengthening OECD research and advice on the Beyond GDP Agenda; policies for well-being; inclusive growth and SDGs. She was previously a Senior Advisor to the OECD Secretary-General and the Head of the Inclusive Growth Initiative, where she developed the OECD Framework for Action on Inclusive Growth and launched Business for Inclusive Growth, a coalition of 40 multinationals committed to fight inequalities. Before joining the Office of the Secretary-General, Romina has worked as Deputy Head of the Well-Being Division of the Statistics Directorate and the Head of the Well-Being and Progress Section, where she was responsible for OECD Better Life Initiative. Before joining the OECD in 2005, Dr. Boarini was a post-doctoral fellow in Sustainable Development (Chaire EDF-Ecole Polytechnique) and worked as a consultant to the French Ministry of Social Affairs.Mr Abdul Manaff Kemokai, Director of DCI-Sierra Leone, was elected President of the International Executive Council of Defence for Children International (DCI) in March 2017. He was in 1998 one of the founding members of Defence for Children International - Sierra Leone National Section, whist he was still in college. In September 2003, Mr. Kemokai was recruited as National Coordinator for Defence for Children International. He extended the organisation’s operation from the capital city Freetown to the three provinces in Sierra Leone where the organisation was much more needed for its advocacy campaign against child abuse. He developed the National Standard for the Protection of Children in the Criminal Justice System in Sierra Leone in 2006 and was also part of the technical team that developed the National Juvenile Justice strategy in Sierra Leone in 2006. In 2016, Mr. Kemokai received the prestigious “Child 10” award, in recognition of his support as a leader of grassroots organisations that work with innovative solutions to address urgent and pressing issues for children. Mr. Kemokai was honoured for the tremendous work conducted by DCI-Sierra Leone through its Socio-Legal Defence Centres (SLDCs). These SLDCs provide direct socio-legal assistance to children and ensure that they are given adequate protection and access to justice.
