Using a Whole Systems Approach to Deliver ‘At Scale’ Climate Action Projects – Glasgow City Innovation District

Part of the University of Strathclyde&#x27;s Centre for Sustainable Development Launch Webinar SeriesThis webinar, led by Dr Roddy Yarr, will highlight the University’s climate mitigation and adaptation efforts developed as part of the University’s net zero planning and collaborative activities in the city. You will learn about the vision, what it is, how it is being delivered and the nature of this collaborative work, at scale and at speed. This bold and ambitious vision for the city is to create a ‘100% renewable Climate Neutral, Climate Resilient’ Glasgow City Innovation District that integrates heat, power, transport, climate adaptation and well-being solutions that are socially inclusive. Roddy Yarr is an Assistant Director (Sustainability and Environmental Management) at the University of Strathclyde where he is responsible for leading the delivery of climate change and social responsibility initiatives and developing the University’s response to net zero emissions across all of its assets. Roddy has developed a ‘Climate Neutral Districts’ concept that will deploy 100 renewable heat, power, active travel, adaptation and well being solutions across all University assets in the central belt of Scotland. Roddy successfully led the delivery of the £20M Combined Heat and Power District Heating project that is now operational at the city centre campus. Roddy is also Project Sponsor for the ‘Heart of the Campus’ project which will pedestrianise and re-landscape the University’s central Rottenrow Gardens area and which will include a number of climate change adaptation and ‘ mitigation features as part of the creation of an innovative city park for students, staff and visitors to the University. Roddy is also the lead on a £3.5 M Sustrans funded Places for Everyone collaboration with the City of Glasgow College and Glasgow City Council delivering active travel and urban realm improvements in the city centre.Gavin Slater BSc (Hons) graduated with an Honours Degree in Environmental Science &amp; Environmental Management from the University of Strathclyde and is the Head of Sustainability at Glasgow City Council. As Head of Sustainability, Gavin is tasked with leading on various topics related to sustainability, most notably the delivery of the 2020 30% carbon reduction target, the 2030 carbon neutral target, and the 2045 net-zero target. In addition, Gavin is responsible for the delivery of the development of the Low Emission Zone, the Circular Economy, the Climate Emergency Implementation Plan, Renewable Energy projects, Electric Vehicle Infrastructure roll-out, carbon reductions projects, and climate adaptation/mitigation projects.
 Gavin was responsible for securing the €19M Horizon 2020 funded Smart Cities &amp; Communities project, RUGGEDISED, as well as the design and implementation of the energy demonstrator projects as part of the £24M Future City – Glasgow project. These demonstrators involved demand-side management, deployment of sensors, 3D modelling of the cities energy consumption, and mapping the renewable energy opportunities in the city.
