Panic and potential: challenges and opportunities in Pandemic collectingNow more than ever, in the face of unexpected and unforeseen challenges the importance of working together to ensure the long term preservation of our digital legacy is paramount. Whether you are working to support organisational decision making or documenting real life stories in these strange times, this is a time to share and discuss the challenges we have faced and opportunities we have embraced. The National Library of Ireland is using the opportunity of World Digital Preservation day on the 5th of November, in a short event, to bring together members of the broader library and archive community and discuss some of these challenges and opportunities in the context of the ongoing need to consider long term digital preservation.This event is aimed at archivists, librarians and others thinking about or working with digital content whether born digital or the outputs of digitisation. Practical Digital Preservation: Leveraging existing systems and learning how to fill the gaps.11:45 Questions and Discussion12:10 FinishSpeakers&#x27; Biographies:Lorraine McCann is County Archivist at Louth County Archives Service where she is responsible for the care and management of the archives and records of Louth County Council. She also identifies, acquires, preserves and makes available archival collections of private origin that document the history and development of County Louth. Emphasising the importance of the County Archives to the community both as a repository for archives and as a resource for research, in 2020 she developed Our Louth Diary Project which invited local residents to keep a diary of their COVID-19 pandemic experience and donate to the County Archives where they will be preserved for future generations.Harriet Wheelock is the Keeper of Collections at Royal College of Physicians Ireland (RCPI), with responsibility for the management and development of RCPI’s Heritage Centre. This comprises the unique library, archive and historic items relating to the history of RCPI, and the history of medicine in Ireland. Harriet holds a Masters in Historical Research from the University of Lancaster, and an MA in Archives and Records Management from University College Dublin. An article based on her MA thesis was published in Archives and Archivists 2: Current Trends, New Voices (Four Courts Press, 2013). She has just commenced a PhD in the Dublin School of Creative Arts, TU Dublin, on the history and development of RCPI’s collections.Maria Ryan is the web archivist at the National Library of Ireland. Established in 2011, the NLI web archive contains over 2,000 archived websites. This year the NLI web archive will archive and preserve over 600 Irish websites with collections relating to the General Election, Covid-19 and Brexit Maria is an archivist and has previously worked on the Abbey Theatre Digitisation project at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She currently serves as co-chair of the International Internet Preservation Consortium’s Training group. Kieran O’Leary is the Digital Preservation Manager at the National Library of Ireland. This involves working with colleagues to create and update digital preservation workflows for a variety of formats, including born digital objects. He is a digital audiovisual preservation specialist, working for almost seven years as the Data and Digital Systems Manager for the Irish Film Institute. His research interests include file format normalisation, digitisation/migration, utilising open source command line tools and microservices within digital preservation workflows. He occasionally lectures in the Digital Preservation Management course in UCD, and has worked as a freelance software developer for the California Revealed Project.Organised by Joanna Finegan, Della Keating, Kieran O&#x27; Leary and Maria Ryan, Digital Collections department, National Library of Ireland.
