<p>Publishing Day on the Creative Writing Programme provides writers with invaluable insights into the publishing industry. Our series of online workshops will give you the crucial edge when approaching busy publishing professionals. Learn how to navigate your way through the forest of agencies and publishers and how to write effective covering letters and punchy, compelling synopses to secure an agent who will be committed to championing your work.</p><p>On Publishing Day we bring together publishing professionals who have worked with the Creative Writing Programme, published writers and unpublished writers in a series of informal workshops and discussions to offer you an overview of current publishing practices, an understanding of the role of agents, publishers and booksellers and a sense of what will be expected of you as a writer from the moment you secure representation for your work to your first publishing contract and beyond.</p>

What are the key routes to publication and what role does a literary agent play?

Some publishers will accept submissions from writers directly. What are the benefits and drawbacks of going directly to the publisher and how can you stand out? 

The publisher's perspective 

Five minute break

Introducing yourself to busy people when they are in a hurry (and agents and publishers usually are) is no easy task, we will offer advice in penning that all important covering letter.

Lunch break

This session will consider how to tackle a synopsis for a short story collection as well as the requirements of a novel or life writing. While acknowledging there is no one size fits all synopsis, we will offer some ground rules and tips for writing these notoriously tricky documents which all writers have to compose at some stage in their writing careers. 

Writing a Synopsis

After the first success there’s a further journey of discovery: the editorial process, book cover design, developing a writerly profile, marketing and publicity. In this session writers will talk about their personal experience of this process and visiting publishing professionals will explain their role in developing and selling a writer’s work. 

After the contract: what happens then?

Our bookseller will explain a little about the business of bookselling to give you the best chance of getting your book on your local bookshop (and others across the country)’s shelves.
