Join us to discuss how microbes can be at the centre of a greener future by generating clean energy and cleaning up pollution.

The future is coming whether we like it or not. We may or may not be writing it in our stories but, assuming we keep writing, we’re all going to be writing in it. Fiction has a tendency to assume the worst about the future, filling pages with resource scarcity, rampant pollution and political dystopia. Sonia Heaven has spent her career building a better future. She’s spent several decades blending microbiology with engineering to produce low-carbon energy and clean up pollution. If there’s one resource that we don’t lack, it’s waste and Sonia will be explaining how she’s turned some of that waste from a burden on our society into a fuel for it and how the fusion of microbiology and engineering may advance in the coming years. In addition to her research, she’s also involved in science communication. She was one of the drivers of the Green Stories project that underpinned the Microbes to the Rescue anthology which we’ll be hosting a panel discussion of on Thursday 9th April. Sonia Heaven is the director of the Environmental Biotechnology Network, national lead for the ‘Task 37’ international working group for developing biogas production and a professor emerita of environmental engineering at Southampton University. Although there is no charge for the session, there is an attendee limit so if you find you can't make it, please remember to change your RSVP so someone else can take your place.
