Online seminar exploring Armitage's biologically-inspired simulations for music and Kanga's cyborg soloists project.

The CHIME Music and HCI series continues in 2025, kicking off with two artists who bring together research and musical practice at a high level. Zubin Kanga Cyborg Soloists: Exploring Interdisciplinary Approaches to Music and Digital TechnologiesCyborg Soloists is a UKRI-funded Future Leaders Fellowship project led by Dr Zubin Kanga. Hosted at Royal Holloway, University of London, it brings together teams of musicians, researchers and industry partners to explore new interactions between musicians and new digital technologies, including new digital instruments, motion and bio-sensors, audio-visual interactions and AI. This presentation provides an overview of the project, examining several case studies covering diverse areas including brain-controlled sound and video, gesture-control of sound, and the use of AI. These cases can provide us with new insights into digital organology, the emergence of the posthuman performer, the role of technology in collaborations involving disabled artists, and the impact that musicians can have on technology design. Jack Armitage Tölvera: Composing with Basal AgenciesThis talk introduces Tölvera, a new software tool for composing with biologically inspired simulations in musical contexts. We'll explore how Tölvera enables musicians to work with artificial life models like flocking, slime molds, and swarms as part of their creative process. We'll discuss the concept of "basal cognition" - simple forms of intelligence found in nature - and how Tölvera allows composers to harness these principles in their work. The talk will cover Tölvera's features, including real-time interaction, Open Sound Control, interactive machine learning, and visualisation. We'll examine case studies of performances and installations created with Tölvera, highlighting how it can be used to encourage discourse about the notion of AI in music. The presentation will touch on broader questions about diverse intelligence in music technology and how to expand our vision for AI in composition and performance.
