We are delighted to be hosting the ANA Lunchtime Brain Breaks Talk Series—a free, online series of 1-hour talks running daily during Brain Awareness Week. Hi my name is Aneta and I’m an Applied Neuroscientist, Independent Researcher, Entrepreneur and Advisor to ANA, with a passion for science communication! Pain is a universal experience, but how we feel and respond to it is deeply personal. In this 30-minute talk followed by Q&A, we will explore the neuroscience behind pain: What exactly is pain, and how does the brain process it? We’ll also discuss practical applications of this knowledge in pain management, including effective techniques and tips to better cope with pain. Whether you’re curious about the neuroscience of pain or looking for actionable strategies to manage it, this talk will provide valuable insights and tools.

10th Mar: Exploring the Neuroscience Behind Pain & Pain Management

Hi, I'm Heema, a member of ANA, SIG Leader, and Applied Neuroscientist. I've spent years exploring the intersection of psychedelics, consciousness, and neuroscience. Whether through research, personal curiosity, or deep conversations, I'm captivated by the big question: What do psychedelic experiences really show us? In this interactive Talk, we'll explore the world of psychedelics-induced experiences; encounters with entities, mystical realms, and ego-dissolving states. Are these real places, deep dives into our unconscious mind, or just our brains playing tricks? We'll look at the science behind these altered states, cultural and historical perspectives, and what it means for how we live. WHAT TO EXPECT: A mix of neuroscience, philosophy and personal reflection-accessible for everyone, whether your new to the topic (no prior knowledge needed) or well versed in psychedelics. This will be an open conversational learning space where all are welcome and you can expect 3 takeaways!

11th Mar: Psychedelics and Other Realms

Hi, I’m Margaux, a member of ANA, SIG Leader, and postgraduate student in Applied Neuroscience at King’s College London, specialising in understanding the neuroscience behind eating disorders and how this knowledge can inform novel treatments. 

Early intervention often plays a crucial role in recovery from eating disorders, but for some, these conditions can persist despite treatment. By understanding the underlying neuroscience, we can better address both early and long-term challenges.  

We’ll explore how eating disorders develop and persist, focusing on:  
The Gut-Brain Axis: How disruptions in communication between the gut and brain may contribute to eating disorders. 
Neurobiology of Persistence:  Why chronic eating disorders are so difficult to treat and the role of brain circuits in maintaining these conditions.  
Hopeful Strategies:  How neuroscience can guide us toward more effective treatment approaches for persistent cases.

12th Mar: Unpacking Neuroscience of Treatment Approaches for Eating Disorders

Hi, I’m Tijana, a member of ANA, SIG Leader, Psychotherapist and Executive Therapeutic Coach specialising in supporting individuals working in high-pressure environments, with a further specialism in neurodiversity.  Have you ever felt the need to hide parts of yourself to fit in? For many neurodivergent individuals, this is a daily reality—a practice known as "masking." It’s about suppressing who you are to meet societal expectations, a survival strategy that comes at a high cost. We'll explore what masking really looks like, why it happens, who is more likely to mask, and how we can create spaces where everyone feels safe to be themselves. What to Expect •⁠ ⁠Real Stories: Hear personal experiences of masking, what it feels like to hide parts of yourself to fit in. • Simple Science: Learn how masking affects the brain and why it’s so exhausting. •⁠ ⁠Shared Struggles: Explore how we all mask sometimes, and why it’s harder for neurodivergent individuals.

13th Mar: Beyond the Mask—The Neuroscience of Fitting In

Taru Sorsa is a guest speaker of ANA; an early-career Researcher specialising in the mathematical and computational modelling of complex systems in biomedical and health applications. She co-leads the Living Systems Research Interest Group at the Alan Turing Institute and completed her MSc in Health Psychology from King’s College London. What does it mean to be included as a complex, adaptive human?

This talk invites you to explore the mind-body connection through the lenses of science, art, and philosophy. Rather than offering answers, it encourages reflection on how we adapt, evolve, and relate to ourselves and others. Through scientific insights, philosophical reflections, and personal narratives, this talk explores how our bodies, minds, and environments continuously co-adapt. It invites you to question what inclusion means within the complex systems we inhabit—and to consider how complexity itself shapes the human experience.
