We mark Elaine Morgan's centenary with the launch of a new biography by Daryl Leeworthy

Elaine Morgan (1920-2013) was a pioneer. Born into a working-class family, she was the first person from her school in Pontypridd to go to Oxford University. On graduation she became an adult education tutor with the WEA. Married to an International Brigade veteran and politically active throughout her long life as a socialist, environmental peace campaigner, and Labour Party member, she maintained several high profile careers. She was amongst the very first women to write for television, winning numerous accolades for her portrayal of women and social class. Her credits include The Life and Times of David Lloyd George and How Green Was My Valley. In 1972, she launched her second career as a science writer with The Decent of Woman. A bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic, and a key feminist text of the early 1970s, it made Elaine Morgan a household name. Finally, in her later years, she underwent a final transformation with the launch of her award-winning column &#x27;The Pensioner&#x27; for the Western Mail. In it, she commented pithily on contemporary Britain and its politics, holding New Labour and the Conservative-Liberal Democrat Coalition governments to account. Published to mark her centenary, this biography celebrates a writer whose work vigorously challenged convention and brought to prominence new ways of thinking about the world, and about women&#x27;s place in it. And all from a desk in her native South Wales.
