This 90 minute introduction to better survey design will take place online (via Zoom) on the 19th November 2020, 10:11:30am. Contents covered during the session: - The origin and purposes of surveys - Writing and framing survey questions - Real world examples of good and bad survey questions - Selecting the right answer options to match your questions i.e multiple choice, scales, text boxes - Analysing your survey data (the basics) - Free online survey tools available - Choosing a survey tool More about the session There is an array of online survey tools available to small organisations in order to evaluate their activities or explore a specific area of interest. Most of them, like SurveyMonkey, are fairly intuitive in terms of the design of surveys and most have in-built analytic functions. However, how can you ensure that you build surveys in a way that will maximise your response rates while also ensuring the quality of responses? How can you make sure to remove biases from questions and ensure respondents feel the response options they have are suitable and neutral? So... if the best survey tool in the world is only ever as good as the surveys built in it, how do you get the best out of online surveys? Join us to find out more! About the session leaders Angela Schlenkhoff-Hus Angela is the Programme Director at Coalition for Efficiency as well as the Chair of The Josephine &amp; Jack Project. She has a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Kent, and her research focused on questions of identity and Home/Homeland of Afghan refugees in London. While she received training in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and used a mixed methods approach in her work, the bulk of her data was collected using qualitative data collection methods, such as semi-structured interviews, oral histories, focus groups and participant observation. She continues to apply these skills in her role at Coalition for Efficiency as well as in training charities in how to apply ethnographic data collection methods in their own work. Lucy Smith Lucy is the Social Research and Data Lead at London Plus. She is a fierce advocate of conducting a mixed methods approach to data capture and analysis, holding both a BSc and MSc in Sociology from the London School of Economics. Lucy is also an active junior member of the data science community across London, collaborating with partners from various Data for Good orientated organisations to learn about and work with datasets, data processing tools and enhancing data skills. Outside of her role, she maintains an active interest in the field of Sociology as an alumna of the academic community. About DataWise London Datawise London helps small charities and voluntary organisations tackle the tough issues that Londoners face by learning how to make best use of data. It helps you to be iterative, continually reshaping what you do day-by-day to better meet the needs of the people that matter to you. With a robust evidence base small organisations are also more likely to be heard and influence stakeholders and decision makers.Datawise London offers training, advice and practical support to help small charities develop data and digital skills they need to deliver the best possible activities and outcomes for local people.Partners Datawise London is a data literacy and digital skills partnership.
