It will be followed by a Q&A. There is no charge for tickets but, if you wish, you can instead support the filmmakers <a href="https://page75productions.com/donate-now/" title="https://page75productions.com/donate-now/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">with a donation</a>. <h3>About the film</h3>For two years, the filmmaker documented the UK’s crackdown on the right to protest, through the lived experience of environmental defenders. She witnessed firsthand how they were silenced in court, criminalized, and subjected to disproportionate punishments for nonviolent protest.This is a British story of dissent told from the frontline. As those in power continue to ignore the climate crisis, the activists are driven to civil disobedience in order to raise the alarm in a bid to prevent the world crossing the line into dangerous climate tipping points. As one judge hands out the longest ever sentences for nonviolent protest in the UK, he accuses them of crossing the line into fanaticism. The film challenges audiences to question what makes dissent effective and where to draw the line on acceptability. <h3>The Q&A Participants</h3>Trudi WarnerRetired social worker, Trudi Warner, found herself at the centre of a landmark case that would have implications for juries rights and climate activists. She stood, in silence, outside a British court with a sign stating “Jurors you have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to your conscience.” She was arrested and charged with contempt of court. This would begin a journey through the courts that would conclude at The Royal Courts of Justice over a year later. It sparked the birth of “Defend Our Juries”. At stake was a 400 year old legal principle. This right was first established in 1670 when the Recorder of London tried to compel a jury to convict two Quaker preachers, William Penn and William Mead, for holding an unlawful assembly. The Jury led by Bushell repeatedly refused to do so.Marcus Decker and Holly Cullen-DaviesMarcus and Holly were building a happy life together in 2022 when Marcus, a long time environmental defender, decided to take part in a daring action to raise the alarm about the climate crisis. Marcus and his co-defendant were the first climate activists to be sentenced under new anti-protest laws. To the shock of many, they were given the longest ever sentences for nonviolent protest at that time: 2 years 7 months and 3 years respectively. For Marcus, a sentence length of over a year meant that he also faces deportation. The film charts Holly and Marcus’s experience as they face an uncertain future. The film tells their story from the perspective of what it was like for the partner on the inside and the one on the outside. All three of the participant-activists who are joining us for the screenings are, from their roots in their Quaker faith, continuing such witness. <h3>About the filmmaker, Liz Smith</h3>Liz is an award winning British documentary filmmaker. Her work is centred around human rights issues. The films she makes at <a href="https://www.page75productions.com" title="https://www.page75productions.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Page75 Productions</a> are the outcome of years of study on the issues driving the rise of populism and the erosion of our democratic rights. However, researching the issues can only go so far. Her approach of spending time with affected communities on the frontline delivers a much deeper understanding of the forces driving these trends.
