Can I sign up for more than one week?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but you may find some aspects repetitive as the new cohort will be receiving the same skills training as you did in your first week.

Question 2

Can I bring my dog?

Unfortunately only service animals would be permitted.

Question 3

Can I bring my (under 16) child with me?

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately not. There are other opportunities for younger archaeological enthusiasts that CHAP offers and you can make enquiries at CHAP@chilterns.org.uk

Question 4

Is there accomodation available, or a camping on site residential option?

Accepted Answer

This year that is not possible - future field schools may have this built in. However, there are camping and other types of accommodation within a 20min radius of the site, and the later start to the day ( 0930 as opposed to 0830) means commuting to site should be unproblematic.

Question 5

Can I make payments in installments?

If this is an easier option for you, then please inform the director and something will be arranged. All payments must be received in full by 15 June.

Question 6

I have changed my mind/ circumstances have changed my plans. Can I get a refund?

Accepted Answer

Full refunds if you have cancelled any time up to 5 days of your start date. This will allow those on a wait list to have a chance to fill your place. 80% refund for up to 24 hour notice. NO show with no notice will only be offered a partial refund at discretion.

Question 7

What if it rains ?

Rain? In the UK? Surely not! But if it happens, we continue to excavate unless the conditions are unsafe to the diggers and/or the archaeology. Wet weather gear is advised.

Question 8

What if one of my 6 days is a washout?

Accepted Answer

If rain does stop play, there are plenty of other things to do and learn in the dry of the tent. If your cohort experiences a full day cancellation due to dangerous weather, you may be entitled to a pro rata refund at the end of the dig.

Question 9

My University would like to see a full risk assessment before they sign off on my attending....

A Risk Assessment? We love those - and are happy to provide a copy to you or your institution in advance. We will go through it during site induction also.

Question 10

You are not a University dig - am I covered by insurance?

Accepted Answer

CHAP is hosted by the Chilterns National Landscape ( Chilterns Conservation Board) and participants are covered by £10m liability insurance.

Who is the Director of this excavation?

Accepted Answer

Dr Wendy Morrison, FSA trained under Prof Sir Barry Cunliffe and has nearly two decades' experience in research and commercial archaeological field work. Formerly Assistant Director of the Oxford Univ undergraduate fieldschool at Dorchester on Thames, and currently Senior Associate Tutor for OUDCE.
