A series of events connected to the project OUR DARK NIGHTS: A NEW COMMUNITY ARCHIVE FOR THE GALLOWAY FOREST DARK SKY PARK

Hello! We are making a new community archive for the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park and we would love for you to be involved. Our Dark Nights will celebrate the rich social, cultural and ecological heritage of the region's dark skies and landscapes through an eclectic mix of artefacts, reading materials, oral histories and artworks that can be historical or newly created. ABOUT THE WORKSHOPAt the workshop, we will:<ul><li>learn about community archives and what they can do</li><li>reflect on dark sky heritage</li><li>explore what the archive could include, who it's for and how it might be used</li><li>try out creative techniques like cyanotype photography and DIY film slides</li><li>assemble a quick "starter" archive to share at the public event later that day</li></ul> WHAT TO BRINGAs part of the workshop, we'd like you to bring an item which says something about your relationship to dark skies and landscapes – you can interpret this as freely as you like!Your item could be:<ul><li>A photograph</li><li>An object</li><li>A place</li><li>A material</li><li>A word / phrase</li><li>A story</li><li>An activity or experience</li></ul>If your item is precious, we can document it / include a copy instead!We will provide light refreshments but ask that you bring a packed lunch (the venue has a fridge) Do let us know if you have any allergies. ACCESS INFORMATIONThe workshop has a maximum of 12 places.We will mostly be seated together at tables, moving between informal conversation and making activities with full instruction and guidance provided. The workshop will include a lunchbreak and shorter breaks throughout the day.Glentrool Hive is wheelchair accessible. There are toilets and showers at the venue, and free on-site parking and bike spaces.If you face any barriers getting to and from the venue or have any other access requirements, please contact Natalie at marrnatalieresearch@outlook.com ABOUT THE FACILITATORSDr. Natalie MarrNatalie is an artist and researcher based in Glasgow with an ongoing interest in the night-time and its place in our lives. Between 2016 – 2022, Natalie researched the social and cultural values of dark skies and landscapes in partnership with the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park and its communities. She is trained in fine art practice, her first love being photography, and has a background in socially engaged arts practice. Recently, she produced the multi-media exhibition ‘There is an Echo in Me’ for the Estonian National Museum’s annual exhibition Who Claims the Night? in collaboration with artist-filmmaker Piibe Kolka and architect and photographer Élisabeth de Bezenac. Dr. Mirjami Lantto KleinMirjami is a geographer based in Helsinki/Glasgow with an interest in more-than-human archives and creative environmental sensing practices. Her doctoral research studied ‘riverscape archives’ as elemental and lively spaces that are continuously re-made and re-imagined, particularly in relations with light. She has further explored water as an agent of meaning-making in several research/art projects. Her work continues to inquire into the ‘voice’ of land- and waterscapes in the ways in which they become archived and known.
