Insights &  practical tips for establishing a playful paedagogic approach: A presentation and workshop about Playeum Singapore

Messing around in Museums is delighted to offer an inspiring AND practical session focused on Playeum, Singapore, with a presentation led by Anna Salaman, Playeums’ former Executive Director. The event will provide insights and practical tips for establishing a playful paedagogic approach at your cultural venue through her presentation, and also in a practical workshop, facilitated by PlayfulMuseums mentees and Museum Play Champions. We hope participants will go away inspired and full of creative and low-cost, covid-secure ideas for playful engagement in their own spaces or settings.Playeum develops innovative and high-quality play spaces, programmes and products designed to encourage open-ended play, and in this lively and practical workshop, Anna will tell the story of Playeums' Children’s Centre for Creativity, the pedagogies that informed the centre’s content, and how those manifested in playful provocations and environments for children and their adults. She’ll talk about how the Playmakers – the staff who worked with the children and their adults in the hands-on exhibition spaces – were trained, and how reflection was an integral, daily part of their work. Anna will end her presentation by talking about the strategic context of play and creativity in Singapore, and how this fitted in with the global innovation agenda. Possibly provocative, we will discuss what this might mean for us in terms of our own strategic planning and thinking for play, creativity and innovation. Using the learning and recommendations from Anna about the Playeum experience, in the second half of the session we will facilitate a workshop to enable museum and cultural practitioners to consider their own spaces and how to offer particularly low-cost, open-ended playful opportunities. Playeum’s DIY approach was part of it's USP, and we will explore and celebrate this as a practical and useful approach to inform how we can innovate and plan for play.The workshop segment will allow attendees the time and space to work together with a facilitator, and to really get into the practical thinking and planning involved in designing for play. The workshop groups will be facilitated by Anna, Charlotte Derry and mentees from the recent Kids in Museum’s PlayfulMuseums project and Play Champions at different UK museums. The mentees come fresh from experimenting playfully, and will be able to share their insights into their own recent playful experiments during our October half term, supporting participants practically, and with Covid-19 with lockdown constraints very much in mind.
