In her talk, Professor Carron Shankland, will  discuss the importance of maintaining work-life balance while working in academia.

<p>Bio: Professor Carron Shankland was one of the first holders of a Suffrage Science award in Computing, and Scottish Woman of the Year for services to science and technology in 2017. She has recently retired as a Professor of Computing Science at the University of Stirling. She is now an honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow, where she did study for her Undergraduate degree and for a PhD. At Glasgow she's continuing her work in diversity and inclusion, and pursuing a small amount of research in data science. Mainly, these days, she is gardening, making art and music.</p><p>Abstract: Being in academia now, with the variety of roles that we all have to play, is potentially overwhelming. These workload demands may be impacting on how we feel about our work and ourselves, and our ability to achieve good work-life balance. But it's really hard to talk about all of that when we are apparently superhuman, members of an elite, constantly proving how brilliant we are. I've been through my own mental health struggles, and will reflect on my own personal experiences openly. The main thing I learned is that we have to help ourselves and each other: in this session we will talk about how we do that. We will reflect on our values and priorities as they relate to job satisfaction. We'll consider barriers and facilitators to staying aligned with our values and priorities, in the context of workload demands, and personal strategies to support better work-life balance and wellbeing.</p>
