King’s Festival of Artificial Intelligence

The King's Festival of Artificial Intelligence is returning between Tuesday 21 & Saturday 25 May 2024, with a series of public events, including lectures, workshops and demonstrations, exploring artificial intelligence with researchers from across King's.

The workshop opens with a short keynote from Dr Koji Tachibana highlighting the ethical dimensions of geoengineering (eg carbon removal and stratospheric aerosol injection), followed by a Q&amp;A session. Audiences will then explore three short perspective contributions on the ethics and practicalities of AI-guided geoengineering.The ethical objections to geoengineering have typically focused upon the difficulties of adopting a control approach to complex Earth systems; the likelihood that such a response will lack international assent, and the worry that it may encourage an abandonment of behavioural change.At some point, however, we may run out of good options and geoengineering may become the 'least worst' option. This workshop will consider whether the potential of AI to deal with large volumes of data about complex systems may be a game changer.You do not need any prior knowledge of AI to enjoy this event.

<h3>Speakers</h3>Deivide Garcia da Silva Oliveira is professor of philosophy at the Federal University of Sergipe, Brazil. He completed his PhD in Teaching, Philosophy and History of Sciences at the Federal University of Bahia-UFBA, Brazil. He held a post-doctorate position at the York University-Canada, and spent a period as Visiting fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. He also holds a Master’s degree in Logic and Philosophy of Science at the Universidad de Valladolid-Spain. Deivide’s research focuses on scientific pluralism, Feyerabend’s philosophy, Feyerabend’s philosophy of education, history and philosophy of evolutionary theory, Galileo’s methodology, Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence, and Science education.<a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk/people/tony-milligan" title="https://www.kcl.ac.uk/people/tony-milligan" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Tony Milligan</a> is a Research Fellow in the Philosophy of Ethics in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Humanities at King’s. Tony is part of the King’s (China) team and the University of Manchester (Russia) team within the Cosmological Visionaries project. Tony is also an Affiliate of the Lau China Institute.<a href="https://www.cn.chiba-u.jp/en/researcher/tachibana_koji/" title="https://www.cn.chiba-u.jp/en/researcher/tachibana_koji/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Koji Tachibana</a> is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Humanities, University of Chiba and studies ancient Greek philosophy, contemporary virtue ethics, Japanese Philosophy, and applied ethics.Nick Treanor is a Reader in Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, and a research affiliate with the Edinburgh Futures Institute. Before coming to Edinburgh, he was the Newton Trust Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Churchill College. His work focuses on theoretical issues concerning how to understand quantities of knowledge, understanding and ignorance. Most recently, he has been working closely with senior industry leaders in civil, structural, fire-safety, forensic and construction engineering, with the shared goal of better understanding the epistemic and ethical dimensions of engineering.
