This presentation will explore how church fathers used and even changed the text of Paul's epistles.

<p>Presentation Title: When Meaning Needs Revealing, I Want Textual Healing: Patristic Changes to the Text of the Pauline Epistles</p><p>Abstract: Greek catenae on the New Testament offer multiple avenues for research into the text of the New Testament including, but not limited to, textual criticism, patristic theology, and philology. Of particular philological interest is the grammatical shift between certain words found in the biblical lemmata and the explanation of those words in the patristic scholia. These explanations, at times, follow standard interpretational motifs still used in modern commentaries, yet in other instance, they effectively “retranslate” the biblical author, suggesting a shift in language away from the Koine Greek of the first century and towards a more contemporary Greek for the reader. Retranslations are occasionally signified by the use of τουτέστιν followed by a more familiar synonym, but also identifiable by a consistent pattern of change such as a consistent retranslation of ἐν Χριστῷ to διὰ Χριστοῦ. This paper will survey two such grammatical shifts between the biblical lemmata and patristic scholia of the Ps.-Oecumenian catenae on Paul, and offer explanations for these changes, demonstrating one aspect of the philological value of New Testament catenae on the text of the New Testament.</p>
