Written in 2020, Lucy Kirkwood’s The Welkin, was first produced at the National Theatre. Set in a village in Suffolk in the year 1756, the play tells the story of a young woman accused and found guilty of murder and sentenced to hang. When she claims to be pregnant, a jury of twelve local women are summoned, most reluctantly as they are pulled away from their work, to ascertain whether the accused is lying or telling the truth - in other words, whether or not she will hang. This intense period courtroom drama – has echoes of The Crucible / mixed with the feminist take on the film 12 Angry Men - as the Guardian said: “The Welkin dazzles with ambition in its examination of the big, immovable structures that inflict violence on women.”Directed by Jon Lee IMPORTANT NOTES:There is a strict no late-comers policy.
