Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival May 2025

Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival 2025 includes ten events taking place across Sheffield throughout May 2025. The festival is curated by Compassionate Sheffield, and aims to create spaces for people to come together to talk openly, without stigma.

This session will support you to grow your understanding and awareness of suicide prevention. It’s a space to learn key facts, debunk myths and stigma, and learn how supportive conversations can make a difference. It’ll explore why bereavement by suicide is a unique grief experience, and highlight local support resources in South Yorkshire and nationally. Whether you’re seeking to deepen your understanding, or help those affected by suicide, facilitator Joanna Rutter will guide you through essential insights for building confidence and understanding.What to Expect:The session will cover the following key topicsUnderstanding Suicide Prevention: Learning essential facts and addressing common misconceptions.The Importance of Conversations: How supportive dialogue can be life-changing.Grieving After Suicide: Why bereavement by suicide is a unique grief experience.Resources &amp; Support: Information on local resources in South Yorkshire and national support networks.Q&amp;A: At the end of the session there will be time for questions and answers.Please note:This session is open to anybody who would like to attend to learn more about the topic of suicide awareness, prevention, key facts and myths and bereavement by suicide. Everybody is welcome to attend, whether for personal, or work-related reasons. The key resources that will be shared relate to support organisations, training and resources available to people across Sheffield and South Yorkshire.The session aims to provide an informative space, to share key information, guidance, resources and sign posting.The information-sharing nature of this session means that this session is not designed to offer personalised or crisis support, or group conversation around personal experiences. Spaces that do offer these will be included in the signposting and information shared.There is no expectation for attendees to participate during the presentation, or have their cameras or mics turned on. However, there is time for questions during the question-and-answer session towards the end of the presentation.Please note, the session content can be emotive. Because of this, we encourage attendees to practice self-care, and take breaks if needed. It can be helpful to schedule in a break after the session too, before the next part of your day.If you feel you need to leave the session at any point, you are very welcome to do so without giving a reason. The slides from the session will be emailed to all attendees following the session and we hope to be able to share a recording for anyone who is unable to attend.Who is facilitating the session?Joanna Rutter (She/Her) will be presenting this event. Joanna is a Health Improvement Principal at Sheffield City Council. She is also a National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Pre Doctoral Local Authority Research Fellow (PLAF) at the University of Sheffield. She is an aspiring academic practitioner with a particular interest in suicide prevention and public mental health. She is a member of the NIHR Academy PLAF, School of Public Health Research (SPHR) Research Network and the University of Sheffield Mental Health Research Unit (MHRU).Joanna has over 20 years’ experience in senior public health specialist roles within Local Authorities in South Yorkshire, leading a wide range of public health programmes. She currents leads the city’s suicide prevention plan and has presented at the National Suicide Prevention Alliance conference.The session will be hosted by Compassionate Sheffield and facilitated by Cally Bowman (She/Her) a member of the compassionate Sheffield team.Accessibility: This event will take place online.
