Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival 2025 includes ten events taking place across Sheffield throughout May 2025. The festival is curated by Compassionate Sheffield, and aims to create spaces for people to come together to talk openly, without stigma.

Talking about life, loss, and death can be tough, but it can also be a positive and meaningful experience. This session aims to create a welcoming space to reflect on what truly matters, where we will share ideas and tools which can support you to start these conversations. Whether you want to have these conversations yourself, with those close to you, or to help others navigate them, join us to explore creative, interactive, and sensory ways to think, and talk, about life, loss, and death. This session will be facilitated by Helen Fisher and Claire Craig from Designed with Care. Sessions will be facilitated on a rolling basis.This session is open to anyone curious about engaging in discussions around life, loss, and death—whether personally or professionally.Event Description:On the day, we’ll have four tables—three featuring facilitated activities and one where you can explore tools and resources at your own pace. By dropping into the session, you’ll have the opportunity to experience:

Life Café – A space to uncover and share what is meaningful in life and care. Through tea, cake, and conversation, we’ll explore photos, letters, objects, words, and emotions—all drawn from a special box designed to spark meaningful dialogue.

Nothing Left Unsaid – When a loved one is ill, facing a diagnosis, or nearing the end of life, the conversations we have become even more significant—yet they can be difficult to start. This table introduces a simple but powerful set of prompt cards designed to facilitate heartfelt discussions with loved ones, ensuring that nothing is left unsaid. You may even get to take a pack home!

What If? – This table provides resources to help people express their preferences and make informed decisions about their care. Whether you're looking for light-touch conversations, deeper discussions, or clinical end-of-life planning, What If? offers a flexible framework to guide the conversation at your own pace.

Timings and participation information:Activities will be happening at intervals between 1 - 4pm but you’re welcome to drop in at a time that suits you.The three facilitated tables will invite attendees to speak and participate. There will however be no pressure to talk, if you decide you’d prefer to listen.If you’d prefer to not join a facilitated session, there will be one table where you can explore tools and resources at your own pace. Parking:• There are 4 blue badge spaces outside the main entrance to the University. These are available on a first come first served basis. Sheffield Hallam University have limited car parking on campus but are able to offer 5 visitor permits for Stoddart car park.• There is cycle parking outside the Owen Building.Public transport:• The Owen Building main entrance is around 320 metres uphill from Sheffield train station.• The Owen Building main entrance is near to multiple bus stops on Arundel Gate.Recording:• Photography will take place on the day of the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to opt-in or out of this on the sign-in sheet.Food and refreshments:• Refreshments will be available and free of charge.• Drinks will include tea, coffee and squash.• Dairy and soya milk will be available.• Cakes and biscuits will be available. These will include vegan and gluten free options.• These will be labelled with allergens.Quiet spaces and prayer rooms:• The Multifaith Centre on level 2 of the Owen Building has spaces designated for prayer and meditation. There is a quiet space to pray, reflect and meditate for people of different religions or of no religion. There are male and female Muslim prayer rooms in the Multifaith Centre, Level 2 Owen There are Wudu facilities in the toilets adjacent to all of the prayer rooms. This is however open to the public / students.• The is outdoor space outside the main entrance of the Owen Building.Seating options:• Chairs in Hallam View are moveable.• Some have arm rests, some do not.Toilets:• There are accessible toilets, male and female toilets, and baby changing facilities outside the Hallam View room.• There are not any gender-neutral toilets in the Owen Building.Audio access details• As the conversations will be facilitated at tables, microphones will not be used.Emergency procedures:• Fire alarms in the building are visual as well as siren.• There is a procedure for people needing to evacuate who can’t use the stairs.COVID Safety Precautions:• Masks are welcome at all our events.• If you have tested positive for Covid, or think you may have Covid, we would kindly ask you to not attend the event.• There are windows in Hallam View which will be open on the day.• There will be a HEPA air filter in the room where the session will take place.
