Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival May 2025

Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival 2025 includes ten events taking place across Sheffield throughout May 2025. The festival is curated by Compassionate Sheffield, and aims to create spaces for people to come together to talk openly, without stigma.

Join us to explore what grief is, how we might experience grief, and gain confidence in supporting yourself and others through grief. This workshop will include information sharing, time to reflect on your own experiences, and a gentle creative activity. No art or crafting experience is needed. This workshop is open to all adults, whether you’re experiencing grief yourself, or hoping to support others through theirs. Facilitated by Cally Bowman and Caroline Plenty from Compassionate Sheffield.Event Description:The session will start with an introduction. Refreshments will be offered, and people will be able to help themselves throughout. We will then outline principles we ask attendees to agree to, aiming to create a safe and supportive environment.We will invite attendees to introduce themselves and then the first half of the session will be in the form of a presentation by Caroline and Cally.This will explore:· What grief is· What might happen when we grieve· Some theories of grief· How we can support ourselvesothers while grieving There will be opportunities for reflection, questions and discussion throughout.The second half of the session will involve a simple creative activity where participants will be invited to decorate leaf and flower shaped paper, writing on it:· What might support someone experiencing grief?· What support they could offer someone experiencing griefNo art or crafting experience is required.We will finish the session by summarising the discussion and inviting reflections.Timings and participation information:· 14:00-15:00 Presentation· 15:00-15:10 Break· 15:10-15:45 Creative Activity· 15:45-16:00 Summary and reflectionsAll attendees will be welcome to ask questions throughout the presentation aspect of the session and there will be opportunities for discussion. This is always optional.There will no pressure to talk or share, if you decide you’d prefer to listen.The creative activity is also optional. If you’d prefer not to write, you are welcome to just decorate the leaves and flowers or just listen/reflect. Accessibility InformationHow to access the venue:• The event will take place in the Activity Room on the Ground Floor of the Millenium Gallery, 48 Arundel Gate, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 2PP.• The main entrance to the Millennium Gallery is on Arundel Gate and takes you to the ground floor. The Activity Room is near to the welcome desk and Ambulo Cafe.• There is another entrance to the Millennium Gallery through the Winter Gardens. This takes you to the first floor.• To access the activity room from the winter Gardens you need to pass through the shop to the other end of the gallery. Attendees will have the opportunity to opt-in or out of this on the sign-in sheet.Food and refreshments:• Refreshments will be available and free of charge.• Drinks will include tea, coffee and squash.• Dairy and soya milk will be available.• Cakes and biscuits will be available. These will include vegan and gluten free options.• These will be labelled with allergens.Quiet spaces:• There is not a designated quiet space however the winter gardens, Ambulo café and upper floor of the Millennium Gallery are all close by and offer seating.• There is outdoor space and seating next to Ambulo café.Seating options:• The chairs are all moveable, but do not have armrests.• They will be arranged in a semi-circle for the presentation, and end of the session.• Separate seating and tables will be used for the creative activity.Toilets:• There are toilets on the ground floor, nearby to the activity room. These include a wheelchair accessible toilet and baby changing facilities.• There is not a gender-neutral toilet.Audio access details:• Microphones will not be used during the session.• There is not a hearing loop in the activity room.Emergency procedures:• Fire alarms in the building are audio only.COVID Safety Precautions:• Masks are welcome at all our events.• If you have tested positive for Covid, or think you may have Covid, we would kindly ask you to not attend the event.• There are no windows in the Activity Room.• There will be a HEPA air filter in the room where the session will take place.
